Ladysmith was named after the Spanish wife of Sir Harry Smith, Lady Juana Maria de los Dolores de Leon Smith.

The guest house was named Boer & Brit, from the time when the town was under siege by the Boer forces, and several fierce battles ensued in the area. The emblem depicts General Sir George White VC in command of the British forces in Ladysmith and General Louis Botha in command of the Boers.
