Sensayuma is set at the mouth of the mighty Tugela River, where the biggest river in KwaZulu-Natal merges its waters with the warm Indian Ocean. Perched in lush dune forest high above the river we have an awe-inspiring 180-degree view across the untouched bay, out to sea and up the river into the rolling misty hills. Sensayuma is truly a hidden gem of Zululand.

Accommodation

Sensayuma is a luxury backpackers and are striving to give you the ultimate backpacking experience possible with spacious, comfortable and clean rooms. All of our rooms and Dorms have en-suite bathrooms with piping hot high-pressure showers and fans to keep you cool. We have heaps of space with a huge open plan communal kitchen, lounge, dining area, library room, bar area, braai areas, various decks and big garden with lots of chill spots, and two pools. As night falls Sensayuma comes to life. The friendly crew loves a good jol and need no persuading to play some music and groove or make a big beach bonfire and gaze up at the stars until you’re ready for your comfy en-suite double room, dorm, tent or teepee. Sleep easy with the sound of the waves washing over you, knowing that come morning another exhilarating day is bound to happen.

Dining

The Porch Cafe offers well-priced delicious healthy food everyday! Situated on the top deck you can sit down and enjoy your meal with a glass of wine or a cold beer while basking in the glorious view.

Have a look at our set Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner menu for a range of vegetarian and meat options. We often braai local meat and fresh caught fish including Tuna and Dorado and use our own veggies and herbs from the garden. Nothing beats a nice thick, locally caught, sustainable tuna steak with a homegrown rocket and basil salad!

For a snack, have a look at our Gourmet Munchies Menu with tasty mueslis, fresh fruit smoothies, home baked muffins, milkshakes, good filter coffee and pizzas to tempt the taste buds. Braai packs and basic foodstuff are available from our shop. There is also a fully equipped communal kitchen with ample fridge space if you would like to do your own thing. And if you fancy a stroll you can go and try a calamari burger at one of the other restaurants in the village.

Activities

Wake up with the sun and hop down to our garden gate, skip along the forest path and jump onto the beach. Wander along the more than 30 kilometers of untouched protected beaches. Gaze out to sea and spot dolphins, turtles and whales cruising by in the waves. Paddle a kayak up the river or out into the ocean. Catch a fish or three and put the big one back. Ride some perfect uncrowned beach and point break waves. Hike through thick woodlands and look for a rare Palmnut Vulture or the beautiful and illusive Knysna Turaco. With year round sun and moderate temperatures Sensayuma will happily show you what paradise is.
