Johannesburg

Georgraphy and History

Johannesburg, also known as Jozi, Jo’burg, Joni or eGoli by the locals is the largest and wealthiest city in South Africa. With one international airport and several local airports, millions of inhabitants and a wealth of activities and things to do, Johannesburg is the economic and cultural centre of Gauteng province.

The city the largest city in the world that isn’t located on a river, lake or coastline. This is thanks to the Witwatersrand hills on which it is situated, rich in gold and uranium. Thanks to its economic success, Johannesburg has grown into a very large city that offers a huge range of things to do, places to see, and a uniquely diverse culinary experience for any tourist visiting the area.

Another major plus for visitors is Jo’burg’s wonderful climate. As with other Highveld areas a typical summer day in Johannesburg will be dry and sunny, followed by late afternoon thunder showers which ease the African heat. With an average daily temperature of just under 26° C, summer days in Johannesburg are usually enjoyable and temperate leaving no excuses for visitors to sit inside rather than explore the beautiful city and all it has to offer. Winter is also quite mild in Johannesburg with the average day being sunny and clear and an average maximum temperature of about 16° C.
