Colenso

Geography and history
Colenso lies on the banks of the Tugela (Thukela) River in the foothills of the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains and was known as Commando Drift before being renamed in honour of the first Bishop of Natal. John William Colenso, who was a missionary, translated the New Testament into Zulu..., earning the title Sobantu - Father of the People. It is here that African life can be observed in its natural state, unspoiled by any form of commercialisation.
The town known as eSkipeni (Zulu for Place of the Boat) was used as a base by the British Army during the Anglo-Boer War. However today, the areas quiet atmosphere contradicts the battle that resulted here, and is regarded as one of the British Army lowest points. The battle was fought on 15 December 1899, the first of five battles to try and lift the siege at Ladysmith, but the battles were either ambushed, repulsed or forced to be abandoned. In total 1100 men were killed at Colenso versus the eight Boers who lost their lives.
Visiting the sites that commemorates these and other smaller battles are the Main attractions.
