Bergville
Geography and history
Equal distance from Johannesburg and Durban, the attractive little town of Bergville, also known as the gateway to the Northern Drakensberg, lies on Route 74 - the more scenic alternative to the Toll Road. Less than 40km from the towering Amphitheatre of Royal Natal National Park, this ideally situated, agricultural and trading centre was laid out in 1897 by a retired sea captain. British forces built a blockhouse in the settlement two years later at the onset of the Anglo-Boer War - that building is now a Monument and Museum within the grounds of the local Court House.
The Spioenkop Dam is not that far, nor is the Rugged Glen Nature Reserve, Cathkin’s Peak State Forest and Monk’s Cowl, making the town a perfect base for exploring the Drakensberg.
Near Bergville is Voortrekker Pass, is a monument of a women walking away from Natal, Susanna Smit, sister of Gert Martiz, who would rather walk barefoot over the Berg than continue to live under British rule.
