Geography and history

The community of Himeville lies snuggled at the foot of the Southern Drakensberg, its high altitude, extreme climates and heavy snowfall caused it to be the last place for the pioneers to farm here, yet it had rich soil, an abundance of water and the most breath-taking scenery. The original San hunter- gatherers spent summers here but followed animal migrations to the coast before winter's onset.

Himville, named after a road engineer and the elected prime minister of Natal in 1889, Sir Alfred Hime. It is here that every year the increasingly popular festival Splashy Fin Festival is found.

Formerly the land of San hunter-gatherers, who spent their summers in and around Himeville, the Himeville Museum, located in what was once a fort built in 1900, has a valued collection of San artefacts and an insightful interpretation of the life and times of these ancient ones is well worth a visit.

The Underberg-Himeville Trout Fishing Club holds rights to more than 160km of river plus 60 dams with a surface area exceeding 400 hectares making it the area to offer the most fishing opportunities to anywhere else in the country. With the abundance of water, means that water sports like swimming, rafting, canoeing and tubing are the order of the day. There is also there golf course in Himville.
